I think it is common knowledge that human society is never at peace. If extremes of exploration, literature, religions, war or science kept the society agitated in previous eras, I think now it is the turn of the irrational. Further study about this leads to quite a surprise. Behind this, there is a non-intuitive reason, language, especially the easy availability of words to identify any variable at one of the two extremes, like happy/sad, friend/foe etc.. and the absence of words to specify uniquely, values that belong to neither of the two.
