New Book: The Fathomable Human

Published a book, The Fathomable Human.

This book revolves around the idea that while other forms of life operate on a consistent, predictable "lifestyle mode," humans exist in an "event mode." Our lives are constantly tuned by something else, leading to an ever-altering and adaptable lifestyle. Why? This flexibility was crucial for our ancestors to overcome a lack of inherent skills and natural defenses, We continue with the same style, and in the present day, this is leading to unintended negative consequences.

The book suggests that we are not putting our assets, like technology, knowledge, resources— things our ancestors could only dream of, to good use. Instead, we continue to be unfathomable. Since we are intelligent ones, we are able to somehow make it work. That may make ends meet, but it's with unnecessary chaos.

The book delves into the origins of this issue and proposes a solution. Move towards a "fathomable" existence. Live in "lifestyle mode" coupled with the use of forgetfulness as a beneficial tool for living one's life.

Overview

In A Fathomable Human, author Roy T. James—a retired Indian Navy veteran and prolific essayist—delivers a thought-provoking philosophical exploration of human nature, societal evolution, and behavioural psychology. Drawing upon a lifetime of observing diverse human interactions, James investigates what he terms humanity's inherent "unfathomable" disposition: our tendency to constantly alter our lifestyles, deviate from fixed natural patterns, and embrace unpredictability.

Key Themes and Insights

The "Unfathomable" vs. The "Fathomable": Unlike other forms of life that follow strict, predictable ecological lifestyles ("lifestyle mode"), humans thrive on an adaptive, volatile approach ("event mode"). While this flexibility allowed early humans to survive without natural biological defenses, James argues it has now become the root cause of modern social strife and systemic complexity.

The Critique of Modern Memory: In a fascinating parallel drawn from computer programming, the author introduces the concept of the missing reset() function in human transactions. He argues that humanity’s relentless accumulation of historical memory and grievances—amplified by modern technology—feeds endless cycles of conflict.

Integration of Cognitive Psychology: Bringing in concepts reminiscent of Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow, James advocates for a balanced coexistence between instinctive reactions ("thinking fast") and measured deliberation ("thinking slow"). He provocatively suggests that embracing a healthy measure of "forgetfulness" could act as the mental reset button humanity desperately needs.

Style and Tone

Written in a scholarly yet accessible professional tone, the book functions as a philosophical essay rather than a traditional narrative. James guides readers through structured arguments divided into logical chapters, bridging abstract sociological critique with practical metaphors drawn from engineering, aviation, and programming.

Conclusion

A Fathomable Human is a compelling read for those interested in philosophical anthropology, behavioral sociology, and introspection. Roy T. James successfully challenges readers to reevaluate cherished notions of human progress, memory, and societal norms, offering a provocative blueprint for simplifying modern existence and achieving lasting peace.
